3  Portable credential declaring proficiency in a particular area of study  Intensive focus on clear, shared and results- based goals and concepts  Credentials help to strengthen teachers’ ability to be mobile in the work environment  Cost-effective alternative to a degree program

4  For the state of Colorado, ELL students make up approximately 10% of Colorado’s K-12 school population (CDE, 2009).  “There is a marked shortage of teachers certified to teach ELLs. Fewer than one in five teachers who currently serve these students are certified to teach them.” -The English Language Learner Guidebook, produced by the Colorado Department of Education, revised April 2008

6 Each course is 15 hours/1 graduate credit and take 3 weeks to complete online. Must complete all 5 courses within 2 years to receive the certificate.  Oral Language Development  Vocabulary Development (PreK-3)  Reading Fluency (2-5)  Writing Development (PreK-3)  Assessing Language Development

7  Colorado Department of Education is endorsing the ELL certificate program to members  CDE funded 43 ELL course scholarships  143 total local ELL course enrollments  4 teachers have completed the certificate program (4-8 nearing completion)

8  CDE and Univ. of Colorado, Colorado Springs list servs  Coordinating e-blasts, webinar orientations and advertising  Conference presentations and exhibits: CABE, CoTESOL, Immigrant Integration grantees  Contact districts with growing ELL populations in rural and urban areas of the state

9 Focused on teaching methods that help students develop 21 st Century Skills. Teachers completing this certificate program will take courses that incorporate the following essential abilities students must apply in our fast-changing world:  Critical thinking and reasoning  Information literacy  Collaboration  Self-direction  Invention

10  Adams State College  Colorado Springs School District 11  Jefferson County School District

11 Each course is 30 hours/2 graduate credit and take 6 weeks to complete online. Must complete 4 of the 9 courses within 2 years to receive the certificate. To be awarded the certificate, teachers must meet the following criteria:  1 required Critical Thinking, Self-Direction/Invention course  Your choice of 1 Collaboration course  Your choice of 1 Information Literacy course  Your choice of 1 Elective course

12  INST 310 – Inquiry-Based Learning in the Classroom (Critical Thinking, Self-Direction, Invention) *Required  INST335 - Constructing Learning Centered Environments (Critical Thinking, Self-Direction, Invention)  INST 330 - Improving Learning Through Collaboration (Collaboration)  TECH 330 – Communicate and Collaborate Online (Collaboration)  TECH 315 – Using the Computer for Cooperative Experiences (Collaboration)  TECH 305 - Using Multimedia to Develop Understanding (Critical Thinking, Information Literacy, Invention)  TECH325 - Searching and Researching on the Internet (Information Literacy)  TECH 340 - Evaluating and Organizing Internet Resources (Information Literacy)  INST325 - Using Assessment and Evaluation (Collaboration, Self-Direction)

13  Colorado Spring District 11 is funding district teachers participation in “Communicate and Collaborate Online” this spring (estimated 14 scholarships)

14  Coordinating e-blasts, advertising, webinar orientations and workshops  Complete certificate program brochure for handouts/mailings  Conference presentations and exhibits: CCIRA, ISTE, Southern Educators Conference  Connect with professional development staff in targeted districts  Expand relationships with current district partners  Connect with the CDE to get their endorsement

15  Boost in local enrollment numbers  Partnered with the Colorado Department of Education  Strengthened continuing district partnerships  New district partnerships  New working relationship with Adams State Collage

16  Implement a tracking system to follow teachers’ progress through the certificate program  Host face-to-face and webinar workshops promoting certificate programs
