GIST Meeting 5 February MSG-1 - PROGRAMME STATUS Presentation to the GERB GIST/PSG meeting

GIST Meeting 5 February CURRENT SCHEDULE SITUATION (as of 31st January 2003) Satellite MSG-1 successfully launched on August 29th ECT. Injected on a 1.9 deg inclined orbit at 10.5 deg West longitude in September Satellite performance test ongoing: First SEVIRI image on November 28th, First GERB image on December 12th, Satellite Commissioning Result Review to be held late March. But: Confirmed failure of one SSPA so far preventing dissemination of data via MSG to users Automatic reconfiguration of a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU). Now operating on the Redundant unit; investigation on-going.

GIST Meeting 5 February CURRENT SCHEDULE SITUATION (as of 31st January 2003) Ground Segment (GS) and Operational Readiness No more critical facilities Central Facility (CF): Acceptance phase completed in August November time frame. IMage Processing Facility (IMPF): Acceptance phase on-going, to be completed by end February. No blocking problems on the on-line functions, Off-line functions acceptance to be performed in February. Upgraded IQGSE delivered to process high inclined orbit images. Tuning activity of rectification algorithms still on-going. Flow test of SEVIRI data (processed by the IQGSE) through the MSG ground segment successfully completed in January GS V1 IV&V on-going, to be completed by June 2003.

GIST Meeting 5 February CURRENT SCHEDULE SITUATION (as of 31st January 2003) Alternative dissemination To recover SSPA failure, a project for a dissemination of MSG XRIT data over Europe has been initiated: Use of DVB & FTP transfer technology Low cost user terminal adaptation Aiming first trial in April 2003 with SEVIRI images Aiming at regular dissemination by mid 2003 Aiming at operational status over Europe by end System Commissioning Completion of system commissioning by end November 2003.

GIST Meeting 5 February GERB OPERATIONAL DETAILS (as of 31st January 2003) GERB operation during sun-avoidance seasons- –Current configuration of GERB-2 on MSG-1 satellite (due to GERB-2 flat Battery) poses a risk of operating GERB during the sun-avoidance season (i.e. Any on-board anomaly, leading to a GERB switch-off, would likely be unrecoverable before GERB detector damage) –Due to anomalies occurred on MSG-1 after launch, EUMETSAT plans to switch-off GERB-2 before entering the next Spring 2003 sun- avoidance season (late February to mid-April). –For the following sun-avoidance seasons, EUMETSAT will nominally switch GERB-2 to SUNBLOCK 2 hours in advance of the identified sun avoidance period and will ensure that the GERB is returned to NORMAL mode within 1 hour of the end of the period. This implies ~ 4.5 to 5.5 hours of outage per day.

GIST Meeting 5 February GERB OPERATIONAL DETAILS (as of 31st January 2003) GERB operation during sun-avoidance seasons (cnt’d)- –The risk to operate GERB-2 during sun-avoidance season (balanced against no observation for 4 months per year) was taken by the GERB PI in June –For the Autumn 2003 sun avoidance seasons, EUMETSAT will pursue the investigations (and implementation if feasible/affordable) on a satellite on-board SW change to reduce the risk of detector damage. –This SW change, will mitigate but not remove the risk of detector damage during sun-avoidance season. The residual risk will lie with only HW triggered switch-off. (e.g. over-current anomaly, battery under voltage protection …). But these HW anomalies are less likely than a SW triggered switch-off. –For future GERB instruments, design changes are under investigation.
