WELCOME WORLD TRAVELERS Creating a Multi- cultural Classroom!

WARM UP:  Mindstreaming- CULTURE  Think about everything you know about the word culture for one minute.  Get a partner and stand face to face with them.  Partner one will talk about the word culture for 1 minute without interruption and without stopping.  Then switch partner 2 will talk about culture for 1 minute without interruption and without stopping.  Listen to me for time!  Share what you or your partner said.

CULTURE? WHAT IS IT?   While you watch this video write down all of the words that you hear that describe what culture is.  Think-Pair-Share!

ACTIVITY!  Behavioral Expectations:  You will stand up if the statement I read out- loud applies to you!  There should be space between you and the people at your sides (Respect other people’s space!)  This activity will be completed without talking. (If you have a question, raise your hand).

MULTICULTURALISM  What is Multiculturalism?  Multiculturalism is the acceptance of many different cultures in a specific place (like a city or country). One culture is not said to be better than another culture.  Example: Our Classroom and Kennedy Middle School

SO, WHAT IS A CULTURAL MOSAIC?  The different people, languages and cultures that create a society  How is this class a cultural mosaic?

PRIMARY SOURCES: BECOMING THE HISTORIAN  Primary sources provide first-hand accounts or direct evidence about a topic that you are investigating.  They are created by people who experienced the events or conditions being documented. Often these sources are created at the time when the events actually happened.  Examples: Stories, Photographs, Artwork, Video footage  Why do we use them? Why are they better than using a textbook?

READ THE STORY AND DISCUSS! (7 MIN.)  What happens in this story?  Why does Zitkala not want her long hair to be cut?  Why do the “palefaces” want to cut Zitkala’s hair?  Why is this story an example of assimilation?  Stop and Jot: I felt like Zitkala once when…  Class Share-out.

EXAMPLE OF ASSIMILATION: NATIVE AMERICAN SCHOOLS IN 1890S (7 MIN.)  Primary Source 1: What kind of clothes are the students wearing?

PRIMARY SOURCE 2  What do you see in this picture?  What differences do you see between the two pictures?

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF BEING MULTICULTURAL? (6 MIN.) ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  Learn new things everyday through other people (Food, language, religion, etc.)  Makes you question or think about what you believe  Every person feels like their culture is valuable and important  Life isn’t BORING!!  Different languages can make it hard to communicate  There might be more misunderstandings  Identity issues—Who am I?

WHAT ABOUT US? (3 MIN.)  Are we multicultural? (Hint: Use what we learned yesterday to help you answer this question!)  Let’s connect to modern examples of assimilation…. LET’S TALK ABOUT IT!!
