1 Native Americans and the Early European Explorers

2 The Essential Question
Who are we as a nation? How have immigrants shaped America and the lives of those who live here?

3 Thinking about new relationships
Challenge: – Go talk to 3 people you don’t know/don’t know well in class – introduce yourself. Keep each conversation going for 60 seconds and we’ll switch.

4 Thinking about new relationships
Journal/QuickWrite – How did you feel going up to someone new? What things went through your head? What did you find to talk about?

5 In a small way, we just caught a glimpse of what life was like for the early Americans.

6 Discuss as a class – What challenges do people face when they meet someone new? What expectations do you have of yourself when meeting someone new? What expectations do you have of the other person? Now think about how it would feel to meet someone new in a new country who doesn’t speak the same language as you, you doesn’t have the same beliefs or customs as you. Now you have a glimpse on how early explorers and the Native Americans may have felt when they first met.

7 What will we learn? Learn some of the complex ways early immigrants shaped America and the lives of those who lived here. Understand some of the key beliefs of the Native Americans and the Early European Explorers and how those beliefs created conflict, ultimately shaping and changing America and the lives of those who lived here. Analyze and apply what you have learned about the past to the influence immigrants have today Express your ideas in a well written essay that demonstrates your ability to write a claim and support it with evidence. Demonstrate ability to follow MLA format

8 What do you notice about the Explorers versus the Native Americans
What do you notice about the Explorers versus the Native Americans? If this was your first impression of the other group – what might each group think? What issues or problems might arise from these differences?

9 Read – “The Sun Sets in the Same Sky” – As you read note 5 major beliefs of the Native Americans. Begin to consider how these beliefs conflicted with the European Explorers. How did these conflicts between the immigrants and the Native Americans shape America?

Students can follow along with a written copy of the speech. Depending where you are at you can have students look at imager, parallel structure, appeals etc. in this speech
