IMExec 2010 Meeting Plan for IMC activities to complement LNO Operational Plan Outline requirements for the EML Conformance Checker and metrics for EML IMC governance Meet new staff at LNO Reports from NISAC and NSF Plan agenda for annual IMC meeting

EML Conformance Checker A tool for sites to highlight their needed IMS upgrades Find data tables which can be read automatically Multiple levels of complexity –Simple metadata-data conformance –Metadata content for LTER Integrated with EML Best Practices

LNO Operational Plan: Involvement of site IMs Product-oriented working groups – Two are funded by LNO each year ($20k) – Products are expected Training workshops – 1-2 three-day training workshops each year ($43k) – LNO-suggested training is onlineonline Tiger teams – Mission is to interact in a timely manner with LNO developers, e.g., help develop use cases – IMs will likely be on each team – Multiple, concurrent teams will be active Research working groups –Decadal plan WGs (includes 4 prospectus groups) ($170k) –Research working groups (includes post-ASM WGs) ($100k) –CIO and NIM will be involved, but site IMs could serve on a working group to assure a deliverable information product Potential compensation –$15k for Information Manager release time –$50k for mini-sabbaticals

Planning Priorities Product-oriented working groups –EML Best Practices rewrite (June 2010) –Network DBs redesign (October 2010) Web services WG should be involved –Suggestions for 2011 ClimDB/HydroDB integration into PASTA Web services for consumers Training workshops (2010) –Drupal installation (Inigo) –Tiger team preparation (just an idea) Tiger teams (2010) –Data Manager suite (manager, catalog, loader, cache) – phase 1 –Discovery/Access API –Data access portal Post-ASM funded working groups –LTERMaps –UnitsDB

Governance issues Does IMExec need a formal authorization from the IMC to make decisions on its behalf? – Historically, IMExec was a steering committee – Example: Should IMExec determine proposals for LNO- funded product oriented working groups and training workshops? How do we assure transparency, participation, and buy-in from the IMC? Do we need bylaws? – Clarify IMExec membership, selection, and roles – Checkout current LTER Network bylaws Network bylaws Convene Governance Committee to address these issues and lead discussion at the Fall IMC meeting – Karen, Nicole, Eda, Emery (liaison to IMExec), others?

Governance issues (cont.) Should we evaluate the process by which IMC working groups are formed and disbanded? Current list of IMC working groups – Units – Controlled vocabulary – Governance – GIS / maps – EML metrics – Web services – IM webpage management Working groups will be listed on webpage with membership – is this the complete list?

IMC 2010 agenda All-IMC discussion of governance, network DB redesign and EML conformance tool and metrics Field tour of KBS Mixer and Demos each evening Breakout session for individual IMC working groups (planning- or product-oriented) Business meeting and VTC with NSF
