Presentation transcript:

Unit One

 Separation of powers  Bill  Legislative branch  Executive branch  Judicial branch  Checks and balances

 Divide the powers of government among different branches, or parts

 Proposed law

 Power to make laws  Congress – the Senate and House of Representatives

 Power to carry out and enforce laws  The president

 Power to manage conflicts about the meaning, application, and enforcement of laws  The court system – judges, courts

 Powers of the different branches of government are balanced  No one branch can completely dominate the others  The powers are “checked” or “kept in check” because some powers are shared with other branches

 Separate the powers of government ◦ Divide power among different branches or parts  Balance the powers among the branches of government ◦ Divide the power so that no one branch controls the other branches

 Divided government into legislative, executive, and judicial branch

 No one branch can totally control the other  Ensures that government power is limited  But, it takes time to work through the court system because it is so complicated

 All “Terms to Understand” ◦ This basically covers the three branches of government and what each branch is responsible for ◦ Video on checks and balances: 
