In your journals on the next empty space write the date and “Do Now,” then answer these questions: What is geography? What are the five ways to look at the Earth? And list this entry in your table of contents. If you are not finished with the vocabulary, finish the vocabulary chart.

Today is Monday, September 21, You will need your: planner, Social Studies journal, Social Studies book. and a writing utensil. Announcements: Who was absent? Check the box. Picture day is tomorrow. There will not be advisory tomorrow. Seating chart adjustments Syllabus AVID

 Is an outline of the topics of the course of a class.  Let’s read through it together.  Take it home and explain it to your parents.  Have them fill out the bottom portion of the last page.  Bring it back to me for a grade. ◦ A comes in tomorrow. ◦ B comes in Wednesday. ◦ C comes in Thursday. ◦ D comes in Friday or after

 AVID helps students reach their goal of going to college or trade school.  Fact. 95% of AVID middle school students graduate from college. That’s impressive.  AVID stands for A dvancement V ia I ndividual D etermination. What do those words mean? ◦ Success through my own  You decide to enroll in AVID and to do the work necessary to go to a college or trade school.

 If your grades aren’t the best and you need help with study and organizational skills, then this is the class for you.  You must have good behavior and attendance to be recommended by a teacher.  You must be willing to work hard and study at least one hour every night.

 In the AVID classes students will: ◦ host guest speakers who will share their success with you; ◦ participate in fundraisers and activities to support to support their school and community; ◦ Celebrate and recognize academic success; ◦ Attend tutorials where adults from the community help students with challenging classwork; ◦ Take field trips to local colleges and trade schools to meet college students and professors; ◦ Take field trips to local business to learn how a good education can lead to a good career.  Who is interested?

Please write this learning target in your planner: Learning Target  I will discover five ways to look at the Earth. Practice Activities  We will fill out an anticipation guide for this section’s reading.  We will listen to Mr. Morgan model rereading.  We will create a graphic organizer to help us take notes on the five themes.  We will read the chapter in small groups. Success Criteria  I will have completed the “before reading” part of the anticipation guide  I will have a web diagram filled out for the five themes.

 After Mr. Morgan returns our worksheets, work together as a group and answer the same questions in the second column. Your answers may be different than the first if your podmates convince you otherwise.

 Put your finger on the target reading skill on the top of page 10.  (A classmate reads it.)  Rereading a difficult passage or reading ahead in the text can help you clarify meaning.  Follow along as I model rereading. (1 st paragraph)  Follow along as I model reading ahead. (longitude is…)

 Before reading, draw the web diagram in your journal and list it in the table of contents.  Fill out the web diagram as you are reading.

Two more words to help you understand the reading.  Theme ◦ The main subject or idea of something.  Traditional ◦ Something handed down from generation to generation.

Learning Target  I discovered new ways to look at the Earth Homework none Exit Task On a half sheet of paper, answer: “What are the two special measurements used to describe location?”
