To Infinitives And Beyond… The last of the verbals.

What are infinitives? They are formed by taking “to” plus a verb To go, to run, to fly, to swim Infinitives are verbals that can be adjectives, adverbs, or nouns! Let’s deal with infinitives as nouns…

What are the functions of a noun? SUBJECT DIRECT OBJECT INDIRECT OBJECT (not too often) OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION (hardly ever) PREDICATE NOMINATIVE THAT’S PREDICATE NOMINATIVE

So, tell me how these infinitives are functioning. To win is important. I hate to lose. My goal is to travel.

Infinitive phrases What can these be? Duh. Intinitives PLUS words that relate to it. Whole phrase behaves like a noun, adverb, or adjective Example: To love grammar is hard. My goal is to pass language arts.

Put it all together…find the infinitive and tell me what it is doing. We hoped to travel this summer. I am learning to ski this winter. To write a book would be easy. The best habit is to work slowly. The book was easy to read. He started to faint, so he went to the doctor. The doctor to see was out to lunch.
