Articles of Confederation

National Government Need it because…. –5 reasons in the book Unite the country Conduct war Control trade Manage conflict World relations A frame work for our government after the King but before our own Constitution was written.

Problems with the Articles Two problems were… –Write the problems as questions that can be answered. –1. ???? –2. ???? How big should the government be? How will states vote/be represented?

People feared... Too much power to the central government. (the whole country) Too much power to the states. So what do you do?

The result... Make it WEAK! –Articles of Confederation Only one house in Congress. Each state had one vote in Congress. No executive or judicial branch.

Achievements Successfully lead war against Britain. Negotiated the Treaty of Paris. Made states recognize each other. Northwest Ordinance –Organize government then apply for statehood. –Guaranteed rights and freedoms.

Problems for Congress No money and no way to get it. No power over the states. –Ignored rules and trade agreements No protection from discrimination. No protection from unfair competition.
