DO NOW If you did not hand in the 10 questions from the past few days and had to complete it for homework, get it out now so I can collect it. Todays Question: Imagine after you came home from school today as you walk into your house there is no one there. No sign or trace anyone of your family even lived there. When you go outside to look there's no sign of your neighbors either and no humans for a 2 mile radius. The only thing that you find is a note that has the word “Kaudi.” What are your feelings, what do you do, what do you make of the note?

II. Early Settlement A. Prior to the 1600’s all European attempts to colonize land north of Mexico had failed 1.Why did settlements fail - Poor Leadership - Unprepared - Not a lot of people went (especially women) - Fighting with Indians

B. Roanoke Island 1. First failure at Roanoke (1585) - Lead by Sir Walter Raleigh - Told to take any lands not Christian - Meaning Indians don’t matter

 Richard Greenville – Leads the 1 st trip to Roanoke - Was a very tough guy - Known for breaking wine bottles in his mouth and swallowing the glass pieces - He orders an attack on the Indians - This will lead to a bad situation later - There were not enough supplies so all the colonists ended up leaving

2. Second Failure at Roanoke -John White was the leader of the second trip -He didn’t bring enough supplies and he leaves to get more

Do Now Without looking back in your notes, list the 4 major European countries that will dominate the colonization of America’s? Then circle which one will colonize the U.S. Next try and list the 4 reasons why early settlements failed

-White doesn’t return for 3 years - When he gets back, Roanoke is deserted -No one has any clue what happened or where everyone went  The only thing left was the word Croatoan carved into a tree - No one still knows what happened at Roanoke

-There are theories of what happened by using clues -It is believed that Croatoa was a local Indian tribe 1.They were all attacked and killed by Indians 2.They went to live with the Indians 3.Attacked by Spanish
