Educator Certification Issues with Generalist EC-6 Science Resources for future educators Book Companies Workshops Teaching Science

In the Fall of 2007, Congressman Rubén Hinojosa convened a group of community leaders for a meeting that was held during the Hispanic Engineering Science Technology Conference (HESTEC) week. The group included the following: University of Texas Pan American (UTPA), South Texas College (STC), Texas State Technical College (TSTC), University of Texas Brownsville (UTB), Avance – Rio Grande Valley, Texas Migrant Council, and representatives from the offices of U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar and U.S. Congressman Salomon Ortiz. The South Texas Literacy Coalition (STLC) is 35 organizations/members strong and continues to work diligently to serve as a voice for the literacy community, while helping make a difference in the lives of children and families by providing literacy resources. Vision The STLC envisions South Texas as a community where every child and adult is a life-long learner skilled with the highest levels of literacy. Mission The Mission of the South Texas Literacy Coalition is to lead an active coalition of literacy providers by promoting and enhancing literacy services and encouraging life-long learning. South Texas Literacy Coalition will promote a culture of literacy by: Increase family involvement in literacy activities. Increase community awareness and understanding of the importance of literacy through the implementation of annual on-going events. Collect and maintain current data on literacy challenges and best practices in the service area and defining and prioritizing goals based on this data. Secure and distribute resources, and develop plans to provide training and technical assistance. Facilitate collaboration among coalition partners. Increase funding for STLC operations and programming. Maintaining current information on the literacy challenges facing groups in the Region One Education Service area which includes the counties of Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy, Starr, Zapata, Webb, and Jim Hogg.

Macarena Hernández Journalist and educator. She’s covered U.S. Latino issues such as immigration and education extensively. Her work has been published in The Washington Post, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Latina, and many other publications throughout the United States. Her essays and columns have been anthologized in both college and high school textbooks. Her video work has been featured on Frontline/PBS and numerous media websites. Macarena is a frequent guest on radio and television shows. She has appeared on shows such as NBC’s Dateline, CNN Headline News, Fox and Friends and on National Public Radio, where she’s been a media guest on Talk of the Nation, Tell Me More and Latino USA. Before joining the staff of The Dallas Morning News as a columnist in 2005, she was the Rio Grande Valley Bureau Chief for the San Antonio Express-News, overseeing South Texas and Northern Mexico. While there, Macarena wrote “One-Family, Two Homelands,” a personal, five-part series exploring Mexican migration through her own family’s story. Macarena’s series is now taught in Texas schools. She is now the Fred Hartman Distinguished Professor of Journalism at Baylor University. Before returning to Baylor University, she was the Victoria Advocate Endowed Professor in Humanities and taught in the Communications Department at the University of Houston – Victoria. She spent a year teaching English literature to sophomores at her alma mater, La Joya High School. She has received numerous awards. In 2003, Latina named her one of their Women of the Year. The following year, Hispanic Magazine named her one of 2004’s Trendsetters. In 2006, the Los Angeles Times called her a Media Face to Watch. Macarena has a B.A. in English Professional Writing and Journalism from Baylor University, and Master of Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley.Baylor UniversityMaster of Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley.
