Functionalist Perspective Functionalists are a group of sociologists who believe that the family, particularly the nuclear family, is very important. They say that the family performs a number of essential functions (roles), for individuals and society as a whole. 3 mins Miss S Brobbey

The family ensures that people conform to the behavioural expectations of their society. The family acts as an informal agency of social control – it ensures that society’s rules and regulations are followed. The family provides an emotionally stable environment for children to grow up in. Families provide their members with essential emotional and psychological support. The family is a place of safety and security. Families produce the future workforce. Families provide for individuals’ basic physical needs (food, shelter, clothing). Miss S Brobbey
