Why Chuuk? Why Parem? 1.Chuuk has one of the largest lagoons in the world with nearly half the entire population of the FSM. 2. Globally recognized, world class dive destination and is home to one of the world’s largest underwater museums. 3. Home to 22 endemic species found nowhere else in the world. 1.The Parem MPA will be the first “officially legislated” MPA in Chuuk and therefore a model to be followed. 2. The Parem MPA is located in one of the largest ABS areas in the Chuuk Lagoon. 3. Home to endangered species such as the Hawksbill Turtle and the Napolean Wrasse. 4. Home to 4 endemic species of birds and 1 endemic bat species.

What Has Been Accomplished? 1.CAP Management Plan complete 2. Municipal Council endorsed Municipal Ordinance 3. Socio-Economic Training & Assessment 4. Community Outreach & Awareness 5. Biological & Socio-Economic Monitoring 6. Parem Community Training

By the end of the Pride Campaign, the Parem MPA will have an increase in fish diversity & biomass, and invert populations and size.

~ Parem MPA will be the 1 st of it’s kind in Chuuk and therefore a model to follow.  People’s livelihoods depend on these resources. (Nearly 70%: of respondents: SEM-P survey)
