The Composition of a Population

A DEPENDENCY RATIO is the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15-64 years) in a population. The age-dependency ratio is often used as an indicator of the economic burden the productive portion of a population must carry..

What do I need to do? Lets look at the population data from Japan. Cohort% Male% FemaleTotal (15.3%)(15.8%) (68.9%) In this case each member of the Potential Labour Force supports and additional.45 people.

Pakistan Pakistan, an LDC, has 45% of its population younger than 15 and older 65. The remaining 55% of the population is between the ages of 15 and 64.. Will the dependency ratio of Pakistan be high or low? Calculate the Dependency Ratio of Pakistan.

New Zealand New Zealand, an MDC, has 35% of its population younger than 15 and older 65. This leaves 65% of the population falling between the ages of 15 and 64.. Will the dependency ratio of New Zealand be high or low? Calculate the Dependency Ratio of New Zealand..

What issues could arise when a country has a high dependency ratio? Countries that have a high dependency ratio have more people who are not of working age, and fewer who are working and paying taxes. The higher the number, the more people that need looking after. How could dependency ratio rates be inaccurate?

Assignment Calculate the Dependency Ratio for Malawi. The information you will need is on page 178 of you text book. Compare the Dependency Ratios of the four countries (Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan and Malawi) in this presentation. Describe any problems these countries may encounter in relation to their social services (Such as health, education, welfare, and old-age security), both now and in the future.
