Laws of Motion NGSS Energy Unit 3

Newton’s First Law of Motion  An object will remain at rest or move in a straight line with constant speed unless it is acted upon by a force.

Newton’s First Law of Motion at the Space Station

STOP! … Quick demo!  Place the index card on top of the beaker.  Place a penny on the top of the index card.  As quick as you can, pull the index card off the top of the beaker.  What happens to the penny?  On your foldable… draw a picture demonstrating what occurred to the penny using Newton’s 1 st Law of Motion.

Newton’s Second Law of Motion  An object acted on by an unbalanced force will accelerate in the direction of the force with an acceleration equal to the force divided by the objects mass. a = F/m  An object acted on by an unbalanced force will accelerate in the direction of the force with an acceleration equal to the force divided by the objects mass. a = F/m

STOP!! … Quick demo!  Place a penny and a piece of popcorn at the end of your table.  For the first trial, blow the popcorn across the table with only ONE breath.  For the second trial, blow the penny across the table with only ONE breath.  What object traveled the farthest? Why?  On your foldable, DRAW a picture demonstrating what occurred to the penny and popcorn using Newton’s 2 nd law of motion.

Newton’s Third Law of Motion  For every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction.

Newton’s Third Law of Motion at the Space Station

STOP!! … Quick demo!  Drop a ball from the height of the table top.  Watch what occurs.  What is the action process of the drop?  What is the reaction process of the drop?  In your foldable, DRAW a picture demonstrating what occurred to the ball using Newton’s 3 rd law of motion.  Drop a ball from the height of the table top.  Watch what occurs.  What is the action process of the drop?  What is the reaction process of the drop?  In your foldable, DRAW a picture demonstrating what occurred to the ball using Newton’s 3 rd law of motion.
