1 Newton’s Laws Chapter 12

2 Newton’s Laws Essential Questions: What are Newton’s three laws of motion? How does Newton’s Third Law explain the flight of a rocket?

3 Newton’s 1st Law Law of Inertia
An object at rest tends to stay at rest, an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. Inertia Ball Demonstration Vampire Killer Demonstration Catch the Penny Demo Index Card with a Coin

4 Inertia Inertia depends on the mass of the object. The more massive the object, the more it resists changes in its motion.

5 Inertia

6 Newton’s 2nd Law Applying a force to a mass will cause it to accelerate F=ma

7 Newton’s 2nd Law

8 Newton’s 3rd Law For every force there is an equal and opposite force.
Rocket Demonstration

9 Forces at work on the Rocket
Inertia – the rocket is at rest. A force must get it to move. Angular Inertia – a small amount of mass near the top will decrease the chance of it tumbling in flight. Air resistance. Gravity. Newton’s third Law.

10 Your Task – Choose one of the following:
Write a paragraph to explain an example of each of Newton’s 3 Laws OR, Draw a picture to illustrate each of Newton’s 3 Laws OR, Do a demonstration for each or Newton’s 3 Laws.

11 Momentum Objectives: Define Momentum Calculate momentum
Explain the law of conservation of momentum

12 Momentum Momentum can be thought of as how hard it is to stop a moving object.

13 Momentum Momentum depends on the mass and speed of the object. The faster it is moving and the more mass it has, the harder it is to stop.

14 Momentum Momentum=Mass x Velocity

15 Conservation of Momentum
The total momentum before a collision is the same as the momentum after the collision.

16 M=1000 kg M=20000 kg Vt= 50m/s Vc = 0 m/s Vc = ? Vt= 10m/s
