The Failure of the League of Nations U.S. never joined. Soviet Union never joined. Germany and Japan left the League in the 1930s.

Totalitarian Governments 1.Italy: Benito Mussolini 2.Japan: Emperor Hirohito & Hideki Tojo 3.Germany: Adolf Hitler Extreme nationalism and racism

Basically, Hitler and Nazi Germany violated the Treaty of Versailles and took back territories they lost after WWI Appeasement: giving into the demands of an enemy in order to avoid war.

Appeasement Fails Munich Conference – 1938 England and France allow Hitler to annex Czechoslovakia in order to avoid war – Hitler invaded Poland Britain and France declared war on Germany World War II officially begins – Hitler invaded Poland Britain and France declared war on Germany World War II officially begins.

The Origins of World War II in Europe Failure of the League of Nations Rise of totalitarian governments Failure of Appeasement Which of these three origins do you think was the most significant? Why?

What does this mean for the U.S.? Cautious Neutrality Neutrality Acts, Americans prohibited from trading with foreign countries at war and traveling on ships of nations at war. Non-military goods sold on a “cash and carry” basis. Lend-Lease Act, 1941 Provided aid for victims of aggression.
