Improving Outcomes in Lung Cancer Project - ILCOP Jeanette Draffan Macmillan Lung CNS NCLFN representative ILCOP

ILCOP The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) brought the following teams together to work collaboratively and share practice to improve the quality of care and patient experience for lung cancer patients The Health Foundation Improvement Faculty at the NHS Institute for Improvement and Innovation National Cancer Action Team (NCAT), National Lung Cancer Forum for Nurses NHS Improvement, Cancer programme NHS Information Centre for Health and Social Care Macmillan Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation

Background ILCOP paired up healthcare teams including doctors and nurses from 30 different NHS Trusts to share best practice in diagnosing, treating and supporting patients with lung cancer, and to look for the underlying differences in rates of lung cancer survival. Project: April 2010 – April 2012

Aims ILCOP drew on the National Lung Cancer Audit data to identify the reasons for variations. Ultimate aim was to help teams consistently improve standards of care and therefore improve patient outcomes, both in terms of clinical measures and the patient experience. Other aims: –identify the reasons for variations in lung cancer outcomes –apply proven quality improvement methods to target specific problems –collect patient experience data –assess the impact of the changes
