5 FY1 Leadership project November 2009-June 2010 The “challenge”: –Identify a problem within the Trust –Design and implement a solution Questionnaire to rate understanding of NHS management systems Introductory lectures –Overview of NHS structure –Clinical Leadership –Involvement of doctors within management FY1 doctors divided into groups

6 Methods Mentors allocated from Trust management Time within F1 teaching for meetings Limited financial resources made available Doctors could opt out Allocate roles and responsibilities as a team Prizes awarded for project presentations judged by Trust Medical Director, Foundation Director and Associate Dean for Medical Leadership

7 Questionnaire Questionnaire distributed: –Pre project to assess base knowledge –Post project completion to assess knowledge gained

13 Increasing Efficiency on Call ‘Bleep’ system being used inappropriately Survey of nurses and doctors –Awareness of bleep policy –How to improve on call referrals from nurses to doctors Patient referral form developed Aimed to pilot on selected wards

14 Waste Disposal and Recycling Aimed to reduce Trust expenditure by energy saving Explored various avenues including campaigns and solar panels

16 New F1 teaching programme in place for F1 cohort 2010-11 Mid year evaluation currently underway Amended version of FY1 medical rota currently in use

17 Conclusions Generally agreed senior trainees benefit from leadership training This project suggests foundation doctors also benefit from involvement in leadership projects All doctors need to develop leadership skills Will become more important with NHS White Paper Reforms
