LITE IS FOR EVERYONE! Abney Elementary School Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) Grant

The St. Tammany Parish Public School System was one of 17 districts in the state to receive part of a new federal grant entitled the Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant (SRCL) awarded to Louisiana by the U.S. Department of Education. Currently the grant involves schools making up the “Salmen Learning Community.” Lower grade programs are at Abney Early Childhood Center, Abney Elementary, the Rainbow Child Care Center, Head Start and Early Head Start. Higher grade components of the grant are being administered at St. Tammany Junior High and Salmen High.

A component of the grant here at Abney is to develop 1 st -3 rd grade teachers’ abilities to provide additional reading instruction in the classroom to students performing below grade level in reading. In 4 th and 5 th grade, pullout reading interventions are being provided to support students that are reading below grade level or exhibiting weaknesses in specific reading skills areas. Teachers are also learning about additional strategies and practices to incorporate into daily lessons in order to increase literacy. Funding for professional development, resources, and personnel to support these efforts is being provided through the SRCL grant. After assessing the students’ first semester progress, growth has been evident. The following graphs demonstrate some of the data collected.
