Early years Frans Lanting was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in He earned a Master’s degree in Economics. After getting his Master’s degree he moved to the United States. Then he started taking pictures of the natural world and never turned back. It never said anything about an influence.

Type of photographer He is a nature photographer. A lot of his work is based around animals but his other work is mostly on weather or the area where he’s at. In a couple areas he talks about how he uses a mix of artificial and natural light to work with more light, which in his opinion more light the better because he has more to work with. That is his style of photograph.

Achievements/interesting facts His current residence is in Santa Cruz, California. He often has photos of his in National Geographic. He won the World Press Photo award 3 times He was the 1991 Wildlife Photographer of the Year. In 1997, he won the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography Award and the 2nd prize Nature and Environment Stories. In 2005 he won the Lennart Nilsson Award. In 2008 he won Photographer of the Year and the Photo- imaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association award. In 2010 he got The Royal Geographical Society's Cherry Kearton Medal and Award.

The tree and the zebra are the main part of the photograph you can tell because they are right in the middle. I like the photograph because it has a good amount of symmetry and it has selective focus. This is one of the only photographs with animals that I actually enjoy. The color is very sharp and gives a good contrast between the zebras and the tree making the shot that more dramatic. The lighting must be high in the day which adds the effect. I selected this photograph because I like symmetrical balance.

It didn’t have a date, time or name to it, besides it being apart of The Life Project in The main subject is the whole thing just because it doesn’t have one definite thing that stands out. The photograph has a good amount of color and I really like how the horizon line is the brightest part of the picture. It captures the beauty nature has to offer is the main reason why I like it but also it reminds me of a photograph I’ve taken. Lighting has everything to do with this photo because all of that color comes from light coming through the atmosphere; the light is coming from right in front of the photo. I choose the photograph because it reminds me of a couple photos I’ve taken.

It was taken in It is a Toco toucan face. It was taken in Pantanal, Brazil. This photo has no title. The photo is abstract which looks cool but the really bright colors I find distracting. It doesn’t really have a main point because it all basically has equal weight in the photo. It is very clear and has good lighting which might make someone wonder how he could get so close to take such a good picture. The lighting is coming directly from the photographer or is directly above but is hard to tell because it is so close. You can argue that it has rule of thirds because where the eye is located but I don’t think it does. It doesn’t really have any lighting effect. I decided to put the photograph in because it is unique and creative.

This photo has no title. The photo doesn’t have a name or place but it was sent into national geographic in 1999 and he had a year long biodiversity mission taking pictures around the world and in multiple locations. The lighting is coming from directly from behind the photographer but he is using his own light as well. The main subject is the iguana because it is the thing that is in focus and has all lines direct to it. It has a nice horizon line and it has leading lines because almost every line directs to the iguanas face. It also has selective focus because the iguana is in sharp focus and the background is out of focus. Lighting doesn’t add or subtract from the photo. I decided to put the photograph in because the details are so sharp and in focus.

It doesn’t have a title. This photo was taken 10/20/10. It was taken in Santa Cruz, California at Falls creek. The lighting is either behind the person or he is using a flash. The photo has a good amount of color. It doesn’t have leading lines. The lighting makes the rocks look brighter. It’s selective focus is unique compared to a lot of pictures because it is right in the subject of the photograph. I picked this photo because it reminds me of a couple photos I’ve taken.
