Vocabulary Destructive Editing In destructive editing, certain pixels are altered. Further edits will call on the newly changed data as the original data is no longer available. Though many image editing programs have an “Undo” command, use of the command is often limited to a specified number of undo edits, all of which are lost once the program is closed. Unless a backup copy was made in advance, saving the image will overwrite the original image data forever. Layer Masking 3 Vocabulary Non-Destructive Editing Non-destructive editing keeps the editing data separate from the original image data. Changes can be made to the editing data rather than the original image, adding versatility to the process. Regardless of how many times the image is saved or the program is closed, the original image data is always available. Layer Masking 4 Vocabulary Eraser Tool The Eraser tool changes pixels to either the background color or transparency. If you’re working on a background or in a layer with transparency locked, the pixels change to the background color; otherwise, the pixels are erased to transparency. Once the image is saved and the program is closed, any pixels erased will be removed permanently. IT: Digital and Interactive Media - Layer Masking Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013

Layer Masking 5 Vocabulary Layer Mask Tool A Layer Mask is linked to a layer and hides part of the layer from the picture.  What is painted black on the adjustment layer will not be visible in the final picture.  What is grey will be more or less transparent depending on the shade of grey.  What is white will be completely visible. Masks can be copied, moved between layers and projects, and/or deleted, but they do not permanently alter the image.
