FERTILIZATION & DEVELOPMENT--#3 The Fetus and its Supporting Structures

a. FETUS Definition: name for developing embryo after 8 weeks

b. UTERINE WALL site of attachment for the morula

c. UTERUS site of development for the embryo/fetus muscles contract during labor to push the fetus through the birth canal

d. UMBILICAL CORD cord containing blood vessels of embryo attaches developing embryo to placenta

e. PLACENTA formed from inner lining of uterus and embryonic tissues allows for the exchange of nutrients, respiratory gases, and wastes between mother and child by diffusion Is not in direct contact with the mother’s circulatory system

f. OVIDUCT site of fertilization and early stages of cleavage

g. AMNION tissue filled with liquid that protects the fetus

h. AMNIOTIC SAC gives fetus a stable environment and protects it from shock

i. CERVIX opening of the uterus dilates, or opens, during birth to accommodate the fetus

j. VAGINA receives semen during intercourse birth canal
