CHAPTER 4.2 Convection and the Mantle

Standard  S.6.4.c Students know heat from Earth’s interior reaches the surface primarily through convection.

Learning Goals

 SWBAT explain how heat is transferred.  SWBAT explain what causes convection currents.  SWBAT explain what causes convection currents in the mantle.

radiation The transfer of energy through space

conduction Heat transfer within a material or between materials that are touching

convection Heat transfer by the movement of currents within a fluid.

Density A measure of how much mass there is in a volume of a substance.

Convection Current The flow that transfers heat within a fluid. A fluid can be a liquid or a gas.

Three types of heat transfer  There are three types of heat transfer: radiation, conduction, and convection.

Three types of heat transfer  There are three types of heat transfer: radiation, conduction, and convection.

Three types of heat transfer  There are three types of heat transfer: radiation, conduction, and convection.

Three types of heat transfer  There are three types of heat transfer: radiation, conduction, and convection.

Three types of heat transfer  There are three types of heat transfer: radiation, conduction, and convection.

Density When a fluid is heated, its density decreases. When it cools, its density increases.

Convection Currents  Heating and cooling of the fluid, changes in the fluid’s density, and the force of gravity combine to set convection currents in motion.

Convection Currents  Heat from the core and the mantle itself causes convection currents in the mantle.

Homework  Workbook Chapter 4, Section 2; pgs #1-14
