1 Science Chapter 1 Section 3: Convection and the Mantle

2 1. What is heat transfer? Movement of heat transfer where heat moves from a warmer object to a colder object.

3 2. What are the three types of heat transfer?
Radiation Convection Conduction

4 3. What is density? A measure of how much mass there is in a given volume of a substance.

5 4. What is a convection current?
The movement of a fluid, caused by differences in temperature, that transfers heat from one part of the fluid to another.

6 1. Heating of cooling of fluid 2. changes in a fluid’s density
5. What are the three processes or forces that combine to set convection currents in motion? 1. Heating of cooling of fluid 2. changes in a fluid’s density 3. force of gravity

7 6. Heat always moves from a warmer object to a cooler object. True
Directions: If the statement is true, write true. If the statement is false, change the sentence to make the statement true. 6. Heat always moves from a warmer object to a cooler object. True 7. Heat from the sun causes convection currents in the mantle. False! Heat from the core and mantle causes convection currents in the mantle.

8 Directions: Pick if each describes radiation, conduction, or convection.
8. The transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid. 9. Transfer of energy through empty space (carried in rays like light) 10. Heat transfer between materials that are touching. 11. Warmth of the sun 12. Burning your feet on hot sand! 13. Melting an ice cube in your hand 14. Heating a pot of soup on a stove 15. Heat from a fire
