Assessment, Visibility and Exploitation of non/in- formally acquired competencies of EXperienced EMPLOyees in Enterprises Dr. Aykut Engin March 2011, Slovenia

GOALS OF AVE EXEMPLO With lifelong learning approach settling, the importance of transparency of competences and making non-formal and informal learning outcomes visible has surfaced. Ave Exemplo aims for a better recognition of skills acquired in non-formal learning. Outcomes of the project include:  Evaluation,  Documentation,  Development and promotion of competences, and,  Implementation of tools for certification.

MAIN RESULTS Tools Tools for recognizing non/in-formally acquired competences: Assessment of the current level of competencies Competence Card for workplace In-house development of professional competencies RARPA - Recognizing and Recording Progress and Achievement RARPA - Recognizing and Recording Progress and Achievement Support and evaluation of the transfer of organized vocational training into professional practice Transparency of Competencies e-portfolio: e-portfolio: an electronic tool to portray the users skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours that she / he is acquiring in day-to-day experiences.

LESSONS LEARNT  Validation of non ‑ formal and informal learning is increasingly seen as a way to improve lifelong and lifewide learning.  More and more European countries are emphasizing the importance of making visible and valuing learning that takes place outside formal education and training institutions.  Countries already having a validation system for informally acquired competences are mostly working with portfolio approaches.

CHALLENGES  Selection of suitable tools Simplicity in use and cost effectiveness are an important factor.  Integrating ePortfolio New method for promoting self organized learning.  Coping with areas of conflict Finding the right method - Self evaluation vs. evaluation by others - Simplicity of use vs. Validity of results  Providing employer support Overburdening staff managers with the multitude of tasks for competence assessment  Providing employee support Examination atmosphere and stress should be avoided: the point is to recognize and promote strengths and to close gaps
