4 What, how and why? (2/3) How: Data gathering activities Data analysis activities Expression as ‘requirements’ All of this is iterative

5 What, how and why? (3/3) Why: the stage where failure occurs most commonly

6 Establishing requirements What do users want? What do users ‘need’? Requirements need clarification, refinement, completion, re-scoping Input: requirements document (maybe) Output: stable requirements

10 Different kinds of requirements (2/4) Non-functional: memory size, response time Data: —What kinds of data need to be stored? —How will they be stored (e.g. database)?

For car design Data: The product must have “access to design information that will be captured in a common file format (e.g., AutoCAD)”

12 Different kinds of requirements (3/4) Environment or context of use: — physical: dusty? noisy? vibration? light? heat? humidity? — social: sharing of files, of displays, in paper, across great distances, work individually, privacy for clients — organizational: hierarchy, IT department’s attitude and remit, user support, communications structure and infrastructure, availability of training

For car design Environment: Files will be distributed and would need to be shared, network compatibility

14 Different kinds of requirements (4/4) Users: Who are they? — Characteristics: ability, background, attitude to computers — System use: novice, expert, casual, frequent — Novice: step-by-step (prompted), constrained, clear information — Expert: flexibility, access/power — Frequent: short cuts — Casual/infrequent: clear instructions, e.g., menu paths

For car design Users: Professional designers who may be worried about technology but are likely to spend time learning a system to help them perform their job better
