Heat Movement

Golden Rule of Heat Movement The golden rule is… Heat always moves from a warmer object to a cooler object. You can think of it like water, if you release water it will always go from an area of high water to an area of lower water.

3 Methods of Heat transfer/movement The three methods of heat movement are conduction, convection and radiation.

Conduction Conduction is a means of heat movement where heat travels from atom to atom through direct contact. Some materials conduct heat faster than other materials, and other materials do not conduct heat at all. There has to be matter for heat to travel via conduction!!! Draw the diagram of heat movement via conduction.

Convection Convection occurs in fluids only. Gas and liquids are considered fluids in science. Convection occurs because of the density differences in a hot material and a cool material of the same make. Think of convection like a hot air balloon, when the air is hot the balloon rises, but when the air is cool the balloon falls down. Draw the diagram of convection.

Radiation Radiation is special because it is the only type of heat transfer that occurs with or without matter. This is important because this is how the sun heats up the Earth. Radiation is when heat travels by electromagnetic waves. Draw the diagram of radiation.
