What is Body Image? Body Image: A persons mental picture, thoughts, and feelings about his or her body. Influences on Body Image Changes in the body, specifically puberty Cultural definition of beauty Parental, peer, and media influences Self-confidence, and self-esteem

Factors That Shape Body Image Adolescence, Puberty, and Body Image Males grow wider chest and shoulders Females round out at hips and develop breasts These new changes can shape how an adolescent sees themselves Many feel uncomfortable about their bodies However as the grow and mature most people work through these insecurities. What is Beautiful? The idea of beauty is subjective. Different people find different things beautiful However one main influence on what people perceive as beautiful is society/culture A culture’s idea of what is beautiful changes over time. People judge beauty in different areas Face Body Personality Interests Social comparisons

Factors that Shape Body Image Parents: The first people a person interacts with Parents might influence a child's body image through Direct Comments about eating, body, or weight. Indirect influence: a child may be influenced by a parent who is always working out to try to lose weight. Parents also influence children through their eating habits

Factors that Shape Body Image Peers: Can be direct or indirect Can be both positive, and negative Fat Talk: Discussions that center around body weight and image. Mass Media: Pictures, flyers, posters, billboards, music videos, and other ads bombard people with images of what they “should” look like. These images can influence body image 75% of females on t.v are categorized as underwieght 5% are overweight. 20% are average body weight.
