BREAKOUT 2: TAKING ACTION TO CLOSE THE GAP (11: :25)

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES Presenter builds on break out 1, but then takes the gap and describes their action plan to refine their work, expand their projects, and close the gap Using the Closing the Gap Action Planning form, participants are invited to create a plan for closing the gap that they identified in Day One Have fun!

SOME IMPORTANT NOTES Our discussions today are about learning, not about performance, so… sharing your challenges and failures can be just as important as sharing your wins and successes.

MEETING NORMS REFRESH Suspend judgment as best you can. Respect one another. Seek to understand rather than persuade. Invite and honour diverse opinions. Speak what has personal heart and meaning. Go for honesty without going on and on and on.

SITE SHARING: REFLECTING ON OUR WORK TO DATE Making Fathers Figure: South Lanarkshire CPP

PROJECT GAPS Multi Agency dimension of the project brings challenges in terms of understanding and awareness of different disciplines: It is difficult to embed practice when key roles are variable Slower than anticipated progress with the dads group activity – now being addressed Operational impact of changes in nursery/ Maternity Ward provision – has had an impact, and we need to support staff to continue their improvement work Need to start looking ahead – moving beyond one test site Making sure we influence strategic planning e.g the local parenting support strategy Juggling conflicting demands of improvement vs process - how do we ensure we can measure the right things?

REVISED DRIVER DIAGRAM Aim Primary Drivers Secondary Drivers Theory of Change We do not expect our aim, primary or secondary drivers to change at this point. However, we continue to refine our thinking about what changes will make a difference and how to sustain these changes. New tests associated with implementation will start to emerge in the coming months

Data We are collating the data from the first set of Dads’ Cards. We also want to engage with service staff to identify was of identifying the impact of the cards on their service (could we link to the maternity quality improvement collaborative, and post birth attachment?) – What is relevant? Will the Dads’ cards for nursery have an impact on dads’ involvement at nursery?

Learning for improvement Question from our learning: How do we move from small scale to slightly larger scale testing How do we link with other nurseries? How do we join up different settings with the same issue e.g. how to engage with dads and male carers How do we go beyond our project and influencing practice in a sustainable way

Site Sharing: Reflecting on Our Work to Date Begin with the Bump Kate Kenmure Child and Family Health Manager Jane Cluness EYC Programme Manager

Shetland Antenatal Parenting Programme 90% of parents-to-be who meet the Antenatal Parenting Programme criteria will improve their knowledge, skills and confidence in child development, child attachment and child safety, by Christmas 2015.

PROJECT GAPS Immediate issues: Low attendance at programme sessions. Evidencing that the programme made a difference. Capturing the experience for the parents to be, did they feel it made a difference. We still only have process data. Further work – the next level:  Maintaining parental engagement after birth.  Ongoing peer support for parents.  Sustainability, affordability and efficiency of time: for staff and parents.

IMPROVEMENTS…

Impact of the intervention

Data Captain – I’m not receiving the data!

Learning for improvement Now we have the tools to record data work with them on data collection and reporting. Keep talking about the data and how it’s helping us to improve. Have them present their data at events. Use time with team to facilitate reflection. Be positive and give praise.

Table Reflection and Discussion part one Using the action planning form – sketch out milestones, next actions, and structural things they need to do to move their dots and close their gap – 20 minutes Action planning questions on next slide

Table Reflection and Discussion 1.What's the next action or task for each to move them forward. 2.What assets can we draw upon within our partners or the community to move this work forward? 3.Who needs to be involved? 4.What do you need for others? 5.What are predicted barriers and what are your ideas for overcoming them?

Discussing as a table, participants are invited to share their action plans What were common theses about your next actions to move things forward? What can you do in the next 2 weeks to move existing projects forward and start new ones? Where do you need help or support? Table Reflection and Discussion part two – 20 minutes

What did you discover in your action planning? What surprised you? What ideas are you taking home from your table discussions? REPORT OUT

PLEASE INSERT HERE (DURING SESSION): – Top 5 emerging themes based upon facilitator themes from tables. THEMES FROM THE ROOM

Parting Thoughts Today was about closing the gap Take your plans to CPP action planning, to close the gap you’ve identified Head into the action period with clarity about what you need to do!

Thanks for a great session!
