Spelling Information Update 20 th January 2016 Year 2

Aims: To update parents and carers regarding the requirements for spelling and grammar in the new National Curriculum To share our new RWInc spelling programme To inform parents and carers about spelling rules, lists and home - school learning To inform parents and carers about new assessment arrangements for Year 2 children for this year

Teacher Assessment Framework for end of Key Stage 1 Criteria for spelling: WORKING AT THE EXPECTED STANDARD Segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling many correctly Spelling many common exception words Spelling some words with contracted forms Adding suffixes to spell some words correctly in their writing- e.g. –ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -ly

PLUS – Grammar knowledge required by the end of Key Stage 1:

Children asked to find and log their own spellings to learn Additionally, children will be given lists of words (between 15 and 20) to learn.

Word Time Principles: Securing the three sets of sounds from the RWInc scheme Securing accurate spelling of the Common Exception Words from previous years Learning different spellings for the same sound – i.e. ay, a-e, ai, and distinguishing between these in common words Reading and writing these words Lists of spellings sent home from each spelling group will be different and reflect the teaching and learning current in each group. Some children will have CEW words to learn specific to their needs.

Phonic Screening Retaken in Year 2 in June 2016 if they did not meet the required pass mark when they were in Year 1 Child did not take the test while they in Year 1, for whatever reason School has no record of their test result ( i.e. new admission)

Tick one box to show where a comma should go in the sentence below. Tick one. Aisha found some red blue and purple beads in the box.

Circle the three nouns in the sentence below. A whale has an enormous heart that can weigh as much as a small car.

Joe wanted to buy a present. He asked his mum if Gran would like flowers. Write Joe’s question to his mum in the speech bubble. Remember to use correct punctuation. _____________________ _____________________

Spelling in Writing Marking Code: ‘C’ if the error is with a Common Exception Word – the children have these words in their learning environment and they are expected to spell them correctly – they have the responsibility for getting these right or self correcting ‘C’ if the spelling mistake is in a topic word – a spelling linked to the current topic or theme Ticks to indicate where a spelling is right Allowing the children to use a dotted line under tricky words

How You Can Help Reading Spelling Homework – ways to help learn spellings – writing and spelling out loud Checking off the CEW words from Lists 1, 2 and 3 Helping with individual readers in school Spelling Matters!!!
