2 Phonics at WPS 30 minutes each day.
Letters and Sounds - 6 distinct phases. Work within the phase appropriate to their level of learning. Regularly assessed and groupings sorted accordingly.

6 Grapheme related key vocabulary
Diagraph Trigraph Split diagraph 2 letters making one sound (ai, ee, oo) 3 letters making one sound (igh, air, dge) Where the two letters are not adjacent (a-e, e-e)

7 Learning phonics… Identifying sounds in spoken words
Recognising common spellings ‘ai’ ‘ee’ ‘ch’ Blending phonemes into words for reading. c-a-t = cat Segmenting words into phonemes for spelling. dog = d-o-g

8 Tricky stuff! A phoneme can be represented in more than one way (cat, kennel, choir, clock) The same grapheme may represent more than one phoneme ( me, met)

10 Phonic phases Phase 1 - Rhyming patterns, nursery rhymes, body percussion (home) Phase 2 - common singular phonemes - s, a, t, p, i, n (EYFS) Phase 3 - digraphs and trigraphs - ch, sh, th, igh (Year 1) Phase 4 - consolidation, blending & segmenting (Year 1) Phase 5 - alternative graphemes - ay, i-e, ea, ie (Year 1) Phase 6 – GPS (Year 2)

13 Sound the same Different spellings Different meanings
Homophones Sound the same Different spellings Different meanings their – The teachers park their car in the carpark. there – The cat is over there. they’re – They’re going to the park.

14 Put each of these homophones into their own sentence:
Your you’re witch which Your hair looks pretty. You’re very kind. The witch is wicked. Which way should I go?

15 Singular = only one Plural = more than one
Plural / Singular Singular = only one Plural = more than one

16 Plural / Singular Adding ‘s’ or ‘es’ If a word ends with s, ss, x, ch, sh, you add ‘es’. For most other graphemes, add ‘s’.

21 Sentence types 4 types: Statement – ends with . Question – ends with ? Command – ends with . or ! Exclamation – starts with what or how, ends with ! Write a sentence for each of these.

22 Sentence types Statement – The pen is red. Question – What would you like for lunch? Command – Pass me the pen. or Stop that, now! Exclamation – How beautiful the weather is today! or What an adorable puppy you have!
