Georgia After WWII  What do you need to know about Georgia’s growth after WWII? * Changes in Agriculture * Growth of Atlanta – Sports and Economy * William B Hartsfield * Ivan Allen Jr. * Ellis Arnall  How do you think that Georgia changed after WWII?

Agriculture  After the war, agriculture was not the dominant industry it was in the past.  Farmers grew less cotton  Started growing peanuts, soybeans, corn and raising chickens.

Atlanta Grows!  People moved from the country to urban and suburban areas.  Businesses moved to ATL  Economy Diversified – there were many different industries and businesses which created jobs  Transportation Grew * Hartsfield International Airport * MARTA  Why did so many people move to Atlanta?

William B. Hartsfield  Mayor of Atlanta and  Led the City into the Civil Rights Movement *Atlanta – city of racial moderation * Helped to integrate many parts of ATL  Made Atlanta the aviation hub of the southeast.  What is named after him?

Ivan Allen Jr.  Mayor of Atlanta –  Continued the integration of Atlanta * removed the “Whites” and “Colored” signs from City Hall * reduced restrictions on African American Police officers * integrated city gov. and fire dept.  Helped to bring Major League Sports teams to Atlanta

Major League Sports  Why Major League Sports? * Bring Revenue (money) to the state *Help improve its image as a major U.S. city  Atlanta Sports Team * Hawks – 1968 * Braves – 1964 * Falcons – 1966  Hank Aaron breaks Babe Ruth’s homerun record in 1974.
