Peachtree Elementary (Gwinnett County) Network Infrastructure Melissa Campbell Gwinnett County Public School’s (GCPS) Local Area Network (LAN) consists of two primary device types. One is an Alcatel-Lucent Omniswitch 7000 or 9000 series chassis. This device acts as the core Switch for the LAN also as a router connecting the school to the GCPS Wide Area Network (WAN). This switch can be found in each schools Main Distribution Frame (MDF). The second type of device is an Alcatel-Lucent Omniswitch 6600or 6850 series switch. These type of switches arrange for client Workstation connections at the edge in the network and are found in each school’s Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF). User workstations connect to CAT5 or CAT6 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) copper cables. Workstations transmit at up to 100 Mbps. A Single Mode Fiber (SMF) transmits the edge switches to the MDF and IDF.
