Computer Networks

By the end of this class, you should be able to: Understand the models of computer networks identify some network hardware devices and cables and describe their roles on the computer network Differentiate between the different network topologies Understand what a bandwidth is.

Computer network Operating systems Peer to peer Client Server

Computer Networks (Area) LAN WAN

Ethernet: is a LAN

LAN Cabling Coaxial cables CAT 5, CAT 6 Fiber Optics

Coaxial cables

CAT 5, CAT 6

Fiber Optics

FIBER OPTIC CABLE ADVANTAGES OVER COPPER: SPEED: Fiber optic networks operate at high speeds - up into the gigabits BANDWIDTH: large carrying capacity DISTANCE: Signals can be transmitted further without needing to be "refreshed" or strengthened. RESISTANCE: Greater resistance to electromagnetic noise such as radios, motors or other nearby cables. MAINTENANCE: Fiber optic cables costs much less to maintain.

Some network Devices Modem: Modulation/ demodulation Bridge: to connect LANs Hub/Switch: to connect computers Gateway: to connect LAN to WAN Router: to forward packets of information over the network, intelligent routers will pick the routes with less traffic so that packets will arrive faster.

What does a MODEM do?

Switch Ethernet Switch

LAN can be connected to another LAN through a “BRIDGE”

LAN can be connected to WAN through a “Gateway”

Network Topologies

Other types of computer networks Intranet Extranet VPN Activity: Find out the difference between Intranet and Extranet

What is a bandwidth? It’s the overall capacity of the connection. The greater the capacity, the more likely that better performance will result. Bandwidth is the amount of data that passes through a network connection over time as measured in bps. (bits per second). Activity: Find out how to improve the performance of a computer network.
