China Limits European Contacts After making large profits from trade in the Indian Ocean region, Europeans began looking for additional sources of wealth. They began seeking trade relationships with China and then Japan. By the time the Portuguese arrived in 1514, the Chinese had driven out their Mongol rulers and united under a new dynasty… Why might the Chinese want to limit European contacts?

Guiding Questions: 1.Why might Hongwu have become a tyrant when problems developed? 2.What probably would have been the effect when Zheng He sailed into a foreign port with a large fleet? 3.Why did the British resent China’s trade restrictions? 4.Why did the Korean attitude toward China change after the Manchu invasion?
