List and explain why you would bring each tool/item. Aim: How did Portugal lead the way to global exploration?

3 The Age of Exploration 1.European countries (Spain, England, France, and the Netherlands) set up colonies in the Americas. 2.The colonies use slaves to produce crops which are then traded back to the European “Mother Country”. 3.Mother Countries make and sell finished products to Africa for more slaves and to the colonies for money. 4.Mercantilism – the mother country exports more than it imports.

5 Europeans Explore the East By the early 1400s, Europeans were ready to venture beyond their borders. The Renaissance in Europe encouraged a spirit of adventure and curiosity. This prompted the Europeans to explore the world around them... How did the Renaissance lead to the Age of Exploration?

9 The following account comes from a member of Vasco Da Gama's sailing crew at the conclusion of a ten month voyage to India: “All our people suffered from their gums which grew over their teeth so that they could not eat. Their legs swelled and other parts of their bodies also; and these swellings spread until the sufferer died. At the end of our long voyage, however, Da Gama acquired a cargo of spices that was later sold for a profit of three-thousand percent. The demand for spice from the Middle East and Asia was so great that a man could become fantastically wealthy by sailing the seas.”
