What is it? Textbook definition: Pattern of abnormal behavior in childhood characterized by disruptive, antisocial behavior
Description Symptoms start showing before the age of 10 Most common among boys Associated with ADHD Children tend to be hard to control, impulsive and show little concern for the feelings of others Intentionally engages in antisocial behavior
Signs of Conduct Disorder Aggression towards people Aggression towards animals Destruction or damage to property Lying or theft Breaking and violating rules Early substance use Difficulty with relationships involving their peers Children often get diagnosed after symptoms continue for 6+ months
Compared to Children with ADHD ADHD Don’t have control of behavior Throw temper tantrums Short attention span and hyperactivity Conduct Disorder Purposefully engages in poor behavior Aggressive and cruel Shows little or no remorse Short attention span and hyperactivity (could have a double diagnosis with ADHD)
Course of the Disorder 3.3% of Canadian children are estimated to have this disorder Most children with Conduct Disorder grow up to be adults with Antisocial Personality Disorder May grow up to have a substance abuse problems Children are also at risk to develop Mood or Anxiety Disorders and Somatoform Disorders
Causes Early rejection from mother Separated from parents Abuse or neglect from family Parents with addictions to alcohol and/or drugs Poverty Being in a large family or crowded house Early institutionalization
Treatment Parents can be trained on how to handle the behavior of the child Therapy for child and for family If in an abusive situation, child may be removed from home Behavior Therapy
