Why study Advertising? We live in a commercial world – constantly bombarded by a pressure to give our money to a myriad of companies and organisations Studying advertising makes us aware of the tactics used to convince us to part with our money Creating an advertisement will display your understanding of these tactics

Communication Study – Part 2 Task: (Complete both parts) After looking at examples of print advertisements for charities and awareness campaigns, create your own print advertisement for a charity (either fictional or real) or to raise awareness of an issue. Make sure you show an understanding of the features and conventions of this type of advertising, and appeal to your target audience. b)Write an essay or present an oral presentation or create a multimedia presentation explaining your decisions about form, purpose, language, audience, and context made in the creation of your example of an advertisement.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS Understanding To what extent does the student recognise the target audience and the purpose of different examples of communication? How well does the student recognise the link between the form and the context of different examples of communication? To what extent does the student demonstrate an understanding of the structural, conventional, and linguistic features of different examples of communication? Application How well does the student compare two forms of communication? How effectively does the student reproduce the characteristics of an example of communication?

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS Evaluation To what extent does the student evaluate the effectiveness of different examples of communication? Communication How accurate and fluent is the student’s expression? How appropriate are the student’s form and register for the audience and purpose?

Decide on the audience for your print advertisement Based on the audience, decide on the publication in which your print advertisement will feature Be aware of the social context surrounding the creation of your advertisement – this may be a source of ideas

How do you demonstrate the performance standards? Plan your advertisement – use booklet supplied Create an advertisement that shows a clear understanding of form rules and purpose, and reveals that you created it for a specific audience in a social context, and consciously chose particular language features

How do you demonstrate the performance standards? Use your booklet to reflect on the choices you made and present an evaluation in your choice of form. Make sure you discuss form rules, purpose, audience and the social context, and consequent language choices.
