Today 1/8 ■Turn in PopSecret Experiment Handout to basket ■Pick up pink paper by basket ■Pick up the folder with your name on it from Lab Table #2 ■Staple a few pieces of notebook paper to the right side of your folder

What does it mean to justify?? Justify: verb jus·ti·fy \ ˈ j ə s-t ə - ˌ fī\ ■Simple Definition of JUSTIFY ■: to provide or be a good reason for (something) : to prove or show (something) to be just, right, or reasonable

Question of the day: ■Select an answer choice and JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWER –You will not receive credit if you do not justify your answer

Today: ■Lab Relay Race!!! ■Directions: 1.Find your baseball card at the lab tables… this will be your group for the day ■DO NOT FLIP OVER THE CARD AT YOUR STATION 2.When I say go- you will flip over your first card 3.Upon completion of the Experiment, you will WALK and bring it to a teacher to check. ■If correct, you will get the next experiment. If wrong, you will be sent back to your station to correct it. 4.Form a line at the desk if there are people in front of you- NO CUTTING 5.There are 5 experiments in all- First group to complete them Experiment 5 is the WINNER

Scientific Method ■NOT just this linear process

Scientific Method really looks like this:

■Hypothesis- an educated guess, based on observation –Prediction of cause and effect –Can be disproven, but not proven to be true (only supported) –“If… then..” Format

■Scientific Theory- summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing – Valid as long as there is no evidence to dispute it (so can be disproven)

■Scientific Law- a statement about an observed phenomenon or a unifying concept –generalizes a body of observations –explain things, but they do not describe them –Ex. Newton’s Law of Gravity ■For more about the difference between scientific law and theory watch this video: –

Science is ALWAYS CHANGING!!! ■New technology, etc. There is no 'proof' or absolute 'truth' in science. The closest we get are facts, which are indisputable observations. Note, however, if you define proof as arriving at a logical conclusion, based on the evidence, then there is 'proof' in science.
