A policy must be Realistic Within control Within resources (sustainable) Measurable Owned by the organisation (ownership)

In my opinion and experiences – it is a long process, which requires many good ideas and discussions and it takes time. The only way is to keep it simple and use the necessary time. It must not just be a piece of paper

Content of a policy The development objective – What ultimately want to be achieved The immediate objective - Decide what to do within the next two- three years? Activities - How can we achieve our objectives – set up a working plan for achieving one of the objectives

Example OHS policy The development objective: That all workers, employers and the authorities follow the law and the regulations. That the working environment is safe, healthy and welfare oriented for all workers Always to have the necessary capacity to meet requests from the affiliated unions and stakeholders. That the workers and the employers work closely together in the important task of improving the working environment in all workplaces That the workers are participating in the development of their own workplace

Example OHS policy Immediate objectives: Increase the public awareness about OSH. Implement an OSH culture in the workplaces. Strengthen the relationship with stakeholders with same interest in OSH. Assist the affiliated unions in setting up OSH-policy and strategy to meet requests from their members. Set up guidelines for OSH-clauses in the collective agreements. Gathering information about safety and health problems from the affiliates especially about industrial accidents and diseases.

Example OHS policy Activities Conduct one national campaign about safety behaviour in the workplaces. Identify the stakeholders in the field of OSH and establish relations with at least 3 stakeholders Set up an OSH-policy and a strategy in at least 3 affiliated unions. Collect examples of OSH-clauses in the collective agreements and distribute them among the affiliated unions Send at least 4 OSH-newsletters to the affiliated unions Conduct at least 1 survey among the affiliated unions.
