Getting a point across…. Whether it is Writing a business letter/research paper Speaking to an audience Conducting meetings How do we get the point across in a short time?

3 Key Identifiers Identify your objective Know your listener Identify your strategy

Identifying Objective Choose a clear and concise purpose of message!

Knowing your listener What is the audience’s knowledge of the topic? What is the audience’s attitude towards the topic? Are there any cultural or language issues you need to be aware of?

Identifying Strategy State, Support and Summarize what you’ll tell the audience and explain why….

Pre-Requisites?? Any pre-requisites to become a speaker on a topic?

Getting point across while writing.. Writing….

Roadmap Pose problem/question Technology is changing and at a very rapid pace and new tools are being developed on almost a daily basis. Instructor–led workshops that train faculty and students in the use of new tools can be expensive propositions for educational institutions. Present solution/tool To address the problem of providing cost-effective hands-on training and to facilitate self-paced, independent learning in large groups, we tried providing hands-on training workshops in the use of an open source tool, MediaWiki. Demonstrate solution/tool

Demonstrate tool/solution What the researchers did(methods) What the researchers found(data) What the data means(discussion) Summarization

Getting point across while speaking.. When it comes to speaking….

Elevator speech The idea of an “elevator speech” is to have a prepared presentation that grabs attention and says a lot in a few words. It could be a short description of what you do, or the point you want to make.

How you say it matters… SMILE: It inspires confidence! STYLE: What you wear shows you care! VOICE: Be sincere and spontaneous! Use pauses. Modulate your volume of voice! BODY LANGUAGE: Stand, don't sit. There must be animation, enthusiasm, variety, informality, color & variety.

When it comes to meetings… Conducting Meetings…

20 minute Staff Meeting Identify Key Issues Identify Key Actions Connect actions to appropriate people Prioritize actions

The End Questions and Queries? with all your communication. Please let me know if this presentation has helped you by ing me at
