Agenda EDMS No. ??? 1 Background – Chemical Hazards & Risk 2 Hazard Spotting / Case Studies 3 Emergencies 4 Analysis of Chemical Accidents 5 CERN Rules, Guidelines, Forms, Checklists… 6 …. Slide 3 of ##

1.Background – Chemical Hazards & Risk EDMS No. ???Slide 4 of ## Hazard refers to the inherent properties of a chemical substance that make it capable of causing harm to a person or the environment. Exposure describes both the amount of, and the frequency with which, a chemical substance comes into contact with a person, group of people or the environment. Risk is the possibility of harm arising from a particular exposure to a chemical substance, under specific conditions.

2.Hazard Spotting EDMS No. ??? Gas bottle delivery point Slide 5 of ##

2.Hazard Spotting EDMS No. ??? Gas bottle delivery point Slide 6 of ##

2.Hazard Spotting EDMS No. ??? Gas bottle delivery point Slide 7 of ##

2.Hazard Spotting (summary) EDMS No. ??? Gas bottle delivery point Slide 8 of ##  Segregation of empty and full bottles  Sheltered  Lockable fenced area  Metal chains for restraining individual bottles vertically  Away from combustible materials… Hazards identified?

2.Hazard Spotting EDMS No. ??? Emergency Safety Showers and eye washes Slide 9 of ##

2.Hazard Spotting EDMS No. ??? Emergency Safety Showers and eye washes Slide 10 of ##

2.Hazard Spotting EDMS No. ??? Emergency Safety Showers and eye washes Slide 11 of ##

2.Hazard Spotting (summary) EDMS No. ??? Emergency Safety Showers and eye washes Slide 12 of ##  Location: visible, unobstructed access;  Tested once per week? Safety Form displayed?;  Water flows at proper angles to flush the eyes or body;  temperature controlled…around 20 C;  clear (not cloudy or coloured) drinking water quality;  Controlled on an annual basis, organized by the HSE Unit.

2.Case Studies EDMS No. ??? PPE Slide 13 of ## Are people wearing PPE in your building?

2.Case Studies EDMS No. ??? PPE Slide 14 of ##  Signs displayed?  Stored in a dedicated cupboard, not with chemicals?  Properly maintained?  Alternative sizes available (S/M/L) Fit-Test performed? Course Code: STRPE03TB ½ day Training Course for wearers of RPE: Course Code: STRPE01IF Test takes 15 minutes: - Normal Breathing - Deep Breathing - Head Side to Side - Head Up and Down - Talking….

2.Case Studies EDMS No. ??? Safety Signs Slide 15 of ##  Hazard warning signs should reflect the real hazard(s) present;  Avoid proliferation of signs;  SCEM No : WARNING NOTICES AND LABELS;  Signs can be ‘custom-made’.

2.Case Studies EDMS No. ??? LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) Slide 16 of ##  All such devices are controlled on an annual basis (downdraught tables, fume cupboards, walk-in booth, moveable capturing hood etc.) organized by the HSE Unit.  If the device FAILS the test it must not be used as a control measure until remedial action is taken. What is LEV?

2.Case Studies EDMS No. ??? Chemical waste Slide 17 of ##  Suitable or original containers;  Container labelled with the name of the chemical and the appropriate hazard symbols;  Not mixed with incompatible chemicals;  Spill retention for liquids (SCEM No );  EDH Internal Transport Request to Building 262.

3.Emergencies EDMS No. ??? Chemical spill Slide 18 of ## Small chemical spill (that can be dealt with safely, without undue risk to personnel, environment…):  Use of absorbant material for liquid spill;  Indoors: ‘Snow’ ( ), multi-purpose liquid absorbant;  Outdoors: ‘ABSORBANTE LOURDE CALCINEE’ ( ), hydrocarbons, oils;  Sheet Material ( C). >; Must NOT be USED for the absorption of the following products : mercury, hydrofluoric acid, Breox oil.

3.Emergencies EDMS No. ??? Chemical spill Slide 19 of ## Medium-Large chemical spill  Call the Fire Brigade;  Cordon/Safety perimeter established;  Suitably Equipped Personnel (ppe, equipment...);  Larger quantities of absorbant material;  Special absorbant kits (e.g. for mercury);  Decontamination of personnel;  Environmental Protection;  Transport of chemical waste to building 262.

3.Emergencies EDMS No. ??? Flammable Gas leak Slide 20 of ## Actions on Flammable gas detection:  Level 3 Alarm to the Fire Brigade;  Flashing warning panel;  Siren;  Close electro valves;  Other actions? (e.g. Doubling of ventilation exhaust speed). 2 day Training Course for workers in ATEX areas: Course Code: STATH02IF

4.Analysis of Chemical Accidents EDMS No. ???Slide 21 of ##  Each year approximately 6 accidents involving chemicals coming into contact with eyes;  Generally low hazard chemicals, chemical irritants;  Always wear suitable eye and/or face protection when handling chemicals (SCEM No ): Safety glasses: Minimum protection Safety goggles: corrosive liquids, dusts etc. Safety glasses over prescription glasses Visor (to be worn over safety goggles): high pressure, large quantities of corrosive liquids

5.CERN Rules, Guidelines, Forms EDMS No. ???Slide 22 of ##
