China, Mao, and Communism Vocabulary

Qing Dynasty The last dynasty in China that collapsed from both internal and external factors.

Opium War War fought over the shipping and trading of illegal drugs by the British into China.

Taiping Rebellion radical political and religious upheaval where a leader believed himself to be the younger brother of Jesus Christ and a group formed to lead a rebellion against the Qing Dynasty.

Boxer Rebellion secret group of peasants murdered thousands of foreigners to rebel against foreign influence.

Sun Yat- Sen The first leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party and replaced by Chiang Kai- Shek.

Chinese Nationalist Party Governed China from Originated as a revolutionary league working for the overthrow of the Chinese monarchy.

Chiang Kai- Shek Became leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party by succeeding Sun Yat- Sen. Was commander-in-chief of the Nationalist Army and forced to flea to Taiwan when the Communist took control of China.

The Long March Started in Shanghai with Mao Zedong and fellow communists fleeing Nationalist Army. Only 10,000 of the original group survived the 6,000 mile march.
