Planets In Our Solar System

Mercury Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun. Mercury’s orbit of the Sun lasts for 88 days. Mercury is quite a small planet. It is less than half the size of Earth. Mercury’s sunny side has a temperature rising to 400° Celsius. Mercury’s dark side, is very cold with the temperature going down to -200° Celsius.

Venus Venus is the 2nd planet from the sun. The planets in the Solar system are all given the names of Roman Gods. Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system.

Earth The Earth is different to every other planet in the solar system because it has life. It has only one moon. The Earth takes 365¼ days to orbit round the Sun.

Mars Mars is called the red planet. Mars is similar to Earth in lots of ways such as, they both have polar icecaps and a day on Mars is 24 hours and 39 minutes.

Jupiter Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. It’s orbit and it’s year is longer than Earths. The first person to discover and observe Jupiter’s moons was Galileo(1564-1642). .

Saturn Saturn is surrounded by rings which could be made of ice. Saturn has at least 18 moons. Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system.

Uranus Uranus cannot be seen from the Earth without a telescope. Uranus was first seen by William Herschel in1781. Uranus takes 84 years to orbit the sun. Uranus has 27 moons.

, Neptune The discovery of the planet Neptune was one of the most exciting discoveries in history. Neptune is the third largest planet in the solar system.

Pluto In 1930 Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh. It is the furthest planet from the sun. Very little is known about Pluto. It takes Pluto 248½ years to complete its orbit round the Sun.
