Homer’s The Odyssey Departure:Initiation: Return: Supernatural Aid The Road of Trials Refusal of the Return

Departure: Supernatural Aid As Odysseus prepares himself to shoot his arrow, he confidently speaks out to the crowd, “‘Now watch me hit a target that no man has hit before, if I can make this shot. Help me, Apollo’” (Book 22, 5-6). Odysseus requests the support and guidance from the god Apollo, because with Apollo’s help he will have success in his shooting aim. Odysseus longs for the supernatural force of the god in order for him to prove his initial point to his audience. In this case, the supernatural aid of Apollo will get Odysseus through his bow and arrow shooting.

Initiation- The Road of Trials Odysseus’ journey was undoubtedly far more than only one major task. He had to endure many obstacles, complications, and insults through countless diverse tests and small missions. Odysseus explains his road of trials in a nutshell, “‘The gods have tried me in a thousand ways’” (Book 9, 3). His journey practically seems endless; once he survives a series of barriers, he is faced with more. His epic victory after his completion of the trials is far worth his hard work and struggles.

Return: Refusal of the Return Odysseus’ point of view on his home is stronger than his view of his quest at one time, “Where shall a man find sweetness to surpass his own home and his parents? In far lands he shall not, though he find a house of gold” (Book 9, 24-26). In this situation, Odysseus’ instinct is to refuse his travel to the lands of his journey and stay in his own personal comfort zone of familiarity. Eventually, he is able to let go of this instinct and return out to the locations of his mission.

Departure: Call of Adventure When King Neptune’s crown is stolen and supposedly known to be located in Shell City, the king threatens to kill the suspect, Mr. Krabs. SpongeBob, risking his own safety, offers to travel to retrieve the crown in order to save Mr. Krabs’ life. The moment King Neptune accepts the offer and gives SpongeBob and Patrick specific instructions is their call of adventure. It is the demand of their journey to travel to the dangerous Shell City, find the crown, and bring it back to the king.

Initiation- Woman as the Temptress After long, useless hours of having no success in their search, SpongeBob and Patrick are ready to give up. However, King Neptune’s daughter, Mindy, finds them and gives them confidence. She convinces them they have become strong, wise men by putting fake mustaches on them. Her plan works partly because SpongeBob and Patrick are fascinated by Mindy, who serves as the woman as the temptress. It also works because Mindy truly gave them the bravery they needed to continue their journey.

Return: Magic Flight When SpongeBob and Patrick have finally found King Neptune’s crown, they come across a man much larger and stronger than them. They cannot bring the crown back to the king in time by themselves, so the man, David, gives them a practically supernatural ride to their destination. With SpongeBob and Patrick on his back, he swims as fast as lightning in order for them to earn victory in their last stage of the mission. This scene is SpongeBob and Patrick’s magic flight in their return of their journey.
