Humanities – Geography Department Farming Homework Name____________________________Teacher________________ / 1.What is meant by the term pastoral farming? ____________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ (2) 2.Describe the problems facing farmers in areas such as that shown in the diagram __________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________ (3)

3. Exposed land with rainfall over 2500 mm per year and cold. Sheltered land with about 1000 mm rainfall per year and 5°C warmer. Abandoned farm house - rural depopulation because few farms make a profit. Wet and cold weather - most crops don't grow and even hay is difficult to harvest. Steep slopes - machinery is difficult and dangerous to use. Wet and cold weather cause diseases such as pneumonia and foot-rot in sheep. Poor, thin, acidic, stony soils give only rough grazing land. Flat land near the river (where the best soils lie) can be flooded in winter and spring. Roads are often narrow and winding, far from the nearest markets.

4. Describe what happens to the land use on the farm as you move away from the farm house? _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ (3)
