FACILITY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM SUMMER 2004 NEW CONSTRUCTION –Molecular and Computational Biology Building –Cognitive Imaging Center REMODELED LABORATORIES –AHF –SHS REMODELED DEPARTMENT OFFICE SPACE –THH –GFS –KAP –VKC

REMODELED DEPARTMENT OFFICE SPACE CHALLENGES –Faculty Growth –Modernization –College and Departmental Identity SOLUTIONS –Use Space Better –Consolidate Departments in Identifiable Suites –Share Resources Between Departments

USE SPACE BETTER (General Goals) Windows should be in offices, not copy rooms or conference rooms. Spaces with high public use, such as T.A. offices and conference rooms should be directly accessed from public corridors. Faculty offices should be accessed from department hallways. Sizes of different types of offices should be standardized. Large offices should serve more than one occupant. (Visiting or adjunct faculty, staff, T.A.)

CONSOLIDATE DEPARTMENTS (General Goals) All faculty members in a department should be located in the same area. Each department should have a reception area directly accessed from a public corridor and serving as a gateway to a suite of faculty offices The department reception area should have a well- identified and welcoming entrance.

SHARE RESOURCES (General Goals) Adjunct professors and lecturers should share offices Graduate students and teaching assistants should share carrels. Departments should share conference, library and copy room space Larger “interaction rooms” should be available for seminars and AV presentations.
