IMPORTANT OS & GUI INFO  An operating system is the most important software on any computer.  This software controls the hardware  The OS also makes it possible to run other types of software  After logging on to the computer you will see the Windows user interface (UI). A UI allows users to give commands to the computer  The main screen for the Windows UI is the desktop.  The desktop is an on-screen workspace where windows, icons, tools gadgets and images appear.  Windows is just one example of OS, created by Microsoft. Microsoft also has competitors. For example, Apple OS is a very popular OS. Linux Is still another OS that is often used to run powerful web server computers
