BELLWORK 9/3 On the paper provided, START A NEW BELLWORK page: Draw a quick example of somewhere in everyday life where LINE is easily recognized
LINE An Element of Design
The 7 Elements of Design are the building blocks, or ingredients, within an artwork.
LINE A mark made by a moving point. Has a greater length than width. Can be actual obvious lines or the borders or edges of shapes.
GEOMETRIC & ORGANIC Geometric lines are mathematically determined; they have hard edges and sharp angles Organic lines are curvy, free-flowing, and irregular
OUTLINE A line that surrounds a shape. Usually the same thickness all the way around. Only the outer edges of the shapes are defined.
4 X 4 GRID STEP ONE Using the sides of your paper as a guide, draw a 4 x 4 grid. Each square should be 4 inches for the length and width.
STEP TWO Using the image of the apple as a guide, draw the apple using these 4 different line types: Geometric Outline Contour Gesture This is an example to reference – ignore 12 boxes, You are only drawing 4 boxes
CONTOUR LINE These also define the outer edges of shapes, but unlike outlines, these lines vary in thickness and darkness. They give a greater sense of depth to an object
GESTURE LINE Reveals the artist’s touch Emphasize direction and fluidity Usually a quick sketch
Gesture line drawings don’t try to represent the figure in a photographic way, but instead suggest the essential feeling of the subject
Leading Line A line, such as a path, that moves the eye through the artwork
Implied Line Line that is created across the gap in the line
